I debated whether or not to include this, but I decided to take a few minutes to share it with you. This is LRToolbox. I came across it recently when searching for tools to clean up outdated photo archives. The tool runs on Windows and lets you work with Lightroom collections without launching the application. Let me explain: suppose you have an old catalogue but are too lazy to install the heavyweight Lightroom software. This software runs independently and does not require installing the Adobe product, which is a benefit.
- On the surface, it appears basic, but the primary feature is the ability to extract previews. If you’ve ever mistakenly erased a folder containing RAW files, even after emptying the Recycle Bin, you’re in a state of worry and nervousness. It’s a relief that the catalogue file is often kept. The application analyses the file (lrcat) and extracts JPEG previews from it. The quality is determined by the preview settings used during import, although at least some data can be recovered. This functionality is essential in a crucial circumstance.
- That’s not the only advantage: the software can convert ratings to XMP. This is important if you want to use another picture editor that does not support Adobe’s database format. Ratings are saved in separate files alongside the photographs, and there is a built-in RAW-to-JPG converter. This is a no-brainer and ideal for archiving: compress old images into JPGs, remove the originals, and free up space—it’s a joy. You can choose whether to remove the originals after conversion or to keep them. TIFF is also supported, which is really fantastic.
- On the technical side, I’d like to raise a few points. The program loads quickly, the layout is uncluttered, and while it doesn’t look amazing, I didn’t enjoy the minimalist design. However, the limited number of buttons makes it simple for beginners to understand. It works on Windows 7 and newer, and I had no problems with Windows 11 during a fast test. Support is mentioned for Lightroom Classic 15.0 (the most recent version was published in October 2025).
Please keep in mind that without an activation key (there is no activation crack yet), the trial version will only allow you to analyse 10 photographs. I recognise that you cannot do anything beneficial.
If you professionally record and save gigabytes of catalogues, you should keep this software in reserve. However, since there is no Treatment, the trial version will be ineffective; we must wait for a remedy as soon as feasible.
